the difference between the monoplata and marceloplata could b considered profound...yet they are similar as they are both tehcnical control positions that were perfected by marcelo

Marcelo as stated by "Paul E. Veile" on the UG, has had soo much success with his omoplata game in training, that he has found even more ways to expose the back and finish in other ways by using his omoplata game. This is opposed to the Armbar/x-guard combo that we are soo used to seeing him employ, of course.

marcelo has gotten to the point where he has discovered a "new" position that works well for him, and that he is frequently using, which he termed the Monoplata, an appropraite name, MONO as in "two"

IF one watches marcelo's third instructional series, the disk on Escapes, "Part two" of Escapes, he demonstrates an entry directly into the monoplata, when YOU are turtled and your opponent has his arm clasped around your lowerback. I believe this is number as technique Number 3 (but i'd hafta double chek that wheni get home)
Off the top of my had, marcelo essentially defends the attacker dominant posiition by gripping his opponents elbow, using his own forearm and elbow to secure the opponents elbow to his soamch, after doing this marcelo seems to do a "forward roll"

as he does h forward roll he ends up in the monoplata position, which is basically an omoplata with both thigh's instead of a single thigh creating downward pressure on the shoulder

so, to paint the picture fo u basically, in typical omoplata you would be doing an omoplata on the opponents left arm let's say. and therefore you right leg would underhooking the opponents left arm and your body would b paralell to theirs, creating the pressure on the shoulder blade. While YOUR left arm would be either maintaining grip on the wrist/sleeve or posting on the ground in order to help you sit up. and YOUR left lg your be either "figure fourin'" your left lg or up by thier face like you mentioned

the monoplata differs in that YOUR left leg would be (from your persective) in front of your opponents arm, closer to your own face. creating downward pressure on thier elbow joint, WHILE YOUR left arm would be controlling the wrist/sleeve of THIER left arm

then it is only a matter of taking your left arm, realeasing the grip and grabbing thier body, in a "body lock" in order to expose the back

hope that clarify's it...
i will post pictures in 2 hours...

IF NOT, marcelo's next instructional DVD set is supposdly according to Viele ALL ABOUT the MONOPLATA!! which is great to hear.

monoplata,

What is the monoplata? When I saw someone post on the UG about it I assumed it was this.

If I get them in the position above, I always finish. So I would think you do not have the underhook pinched tight enough to you. Often you can finish just by shifting your hips instead of pulling your leg since it is so tight. If they escape me it is normally as I try to get the foot over the face and they are able to sit up. I have found I can just go into the normal omaplata from there.

if your marceloplata'in the opponents left arm from mount, lets say, and it looks like in the video that you posted that you finished by applying pressure on your own left thigh with your left arm in the direction toward the opponents feet, i have been having trouble finishing like that, is there something i am missing perhaps? or is it simply that I need to keep his underhook real deep and not let him pull it out at all as i throw the foot over?

There was almost zero overlap. Especially on the omoplata day, I'd never seen 99% of this before, and even if I had, not in this great of detail.

kevinsbears,

Most people ask Marcelo for the same thing when the host a seminar: Arm Drag, X gaurd, taking the back, RNC. After training with him several times I knew how impressive his omaplata game was and wanted to spend one whole day on that.

I also knew that he had much more detail for finishing the RNC than you normally get in a seminar. So I asked him to spend one whole day on that.

Almost everything he taught to finish the RNC was new to me. I have been working the Marceloplata for sometime so I knew the basics and there is good information on his last set about it. But he had setups from side mount and half guard that I had never seen before.

In the seminars I have done that were similar there was always enough detail that I always learned things I had never seen before.

Any pics? Especially for the "keep them on the choking side"; this is a great write up - appears that Marcelo showed some great details. How much overlap was there form the seminar (including past seminars and privates that you or Kirby have taken) and his DVD sets.
